Our mission is a direct reflection of the belief that education is a human right with immense power to transform lives. It is the foundation upon which freedom, democracy, and sustainable human development can be built, as articulated by the late Kofi Annan.
The Metropolitan Waqf was established to address a critical issue in Nigeria: the alarming number of out-of-school children. According to UNICEF, one in five of the world’s out-of-school children lives in Nigeria, with more than 13 million children lacking access to a quality education. This reality inspired our founding team to focus on education as a strategic tool for economic growth, poverty alleviation, and the fight against inequality.
Our mission is deeply rooted in the Islamic concept of Waqf, an endowment that guarantees the perpetuity of one’s charity (Sadaqah Jariyah). This model aligns with the core Islamic teachings that emphasize the continuous reward for good deeds, particularly those that benefit society. The Qur’an also encourages believers to “spend in charity. “You will never achieve righteousness until you donate some of what you cherish. And whatever you give is certainly well known to Allah.” (3:92), and our focus on providing education is a means of spending on one of the most beloved and impactful causes: securing the future of youth through knowledge.
We hope to see a future where every child, regardless of their circumstances, has the opportunity to gain the skills and knowledge necessary to advance in life and pursue a rewarding career. We envision a society with reduced illiteracy, greater equality, and a stronger foundation for sustainable human development. Our ultimate goal is to transform social capital into lasting social and public infrastructure, empowering future generations to contribute positively to their communities.
Our educational services are primarily funded through our endowment model. Our current and proposed projects include:
